These paintings were born from memory — the memory of a voice, a feeling, and music that seems to exist outside of time.
Inspired by Nick Drake and his debut album Five Leaves Left, recorded in 1969, this series began in 2008 with the intent to complete one painting for each of the album's 10 songs. Nick Drake's music is difficult to place in just one feeling — it is happy and sad, powerful and fragile, mystical, healing, and deeply insightful all at once.
From his song "Cello Song," a few words that have always stayed close: "forget this cruel world... I'll just sit and wait and sing my song."
Drake suffered from depression and insomnia throughout his life, and these struggles were quietly woven into his lyrics. After completing his third album, Pink Moon, in 1972, he withdrew from performing and recording, retreating to his parents' home in rural Warwickshire. On November 25, 1974, Nick Drake passed away from an overdose of a prescribed antidepressant. He was 26 years old.
